French is taught throughout the school from Nursery to Year 6. We use material from various commercial language courses, the Internet and other sources. The interactive whiteboard is also used extensively in the classroom.
Infant lessons are based almost exclusively on listening and speaking skills, using songs, stories and role-play, although there is a gradual introduction of the written word, first for passive recognition (i.e. reading) in Year 1 and later for some active reproduction (i.e. writing) in Year 2.
At Junior level, increasing importance is now placed on reading and writing skills, but oral work is still a fundamental part of these lessons. The school subscribes to the Linguascope website which allows the children to practise their language learning at home for French, Spanish as well as Italian and German!
In addition, annual French Breakfasts are held in Year 1 and 2 with parents invited to join their children for this event. It culminates in a mini-show which is an opportunity for the children to showcase what they have been learning in French. For Year 5 there is an annual Language Day in the summer term.
Additionally, Spanish is taught in Year 5 and 6 to familiarise the children with the language before moving on to secondary school.
