The Board of Governors for 2018/2019 consists of:-
Mr David Arnold MBE (Chairman)
David Arnold spent most of his working life in the printing and publishing industry. Having built up and sold a fully integrated group of companies, he now concentrates on the travel industry and is the Chairman of Solo’s Holidays Limited, a specialist tour operator. He is also the Chairman of the Employment Resource Centre, a charity involved with enabling the unemployed to return to work by retraining and honing existing skills.
David is Chairman of the Board of Governors and also serves on the Finance and General Purposes Committee. Three of his grandchildren have moved on from Manor Lodge to local independent senior schools.
Mr Graham Black
Graham spent his career in banking and finance in the City, commencing at Coutts & Co and ending as Company Secretary and Finance Director for a broking firm. He went on to serve as Bursar at St Edmunds College in Ware and has also served as Business Manager at three state schools as well as serving as a Local Governor at Croydon High School, a GDST School, for fourteen years. He is currently enjoying an active retirement, taking on a number of consultancy projects.
Graham is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Mrs Trudy Capaldo
Trudy is a Chartered Accountant with extensive financial experience at senior management level. She is currently CFO and founding team member of an early stage company.
Trudy has three children who all attended Manor Lodge and moved on to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Schools. Trudy is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Mr Mark Cherry (Chairman, Finance and General Purposes and Health and Safety Committees)
Mark is a Chartered Surveyor with a wide experience in the fields of property investment and development together with a background in banking. He is Investment Director for a major property development company and is responsible for new acquisitions and a range of commercial and residential development projects.
Mark has three sons who attended Manor Lodge and moved on to attend Merchant Taylors’ School and Aldenham School. Mark is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Mrs Sonia Coventry (Parent Governor)
Sonia is EYPS qualified and specialises in the EYFS and Montessori philosophy. She is the owner and manager of her own local nursery and has extensive experience in matters relating to child development and safeguarding.
Sonia has two children. Her son is currently in Year 4 at Manor Lodge and a daughter at Nursery. Sonia is a member of the Education Committee.
Mrs Helen Gunasekera
Helen is a Solicitor and worked in private practice until 2000. She then joined and is currently a Senior Lawyer in the Government Legal Service where she specialises in Governance and Litigation.
Helen has a daughter and a son who left Manor Lodge in 2015 and 2013 to attend Dame Alice Owen’s School. Her daughter was in the first intake of Manor Lodge Nursery when it opened in 2008. Helen’s husband’s family lived in Elstree for over 30 years. Helen is a member of the Education Committee.
Mrs Sarah Hollis (Chair, Education Committee)
Sarah is the Head of Buckingham Prep School. Sarah is a member of the Education Committee.
Ms Melody Jones
Melody was born in Northern Ireland and attended grammar school there before reading Natural Sciences at Durham University and completing her PGCE at the University of Manchester.
Melody is a Physics teacher. She started teaching at Dover College and moved on to Wellington College where she became Head of Physics. She was Head of Lower School and then Head of Lower Sixth and Admissions at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and is now Second Master at St Albans School. Melody is a member of the Education Committee.
Dr Shahzad Malik (Parent Governor)
Shahzad is a Founding General Partner of Advent Life Sciences, one of Europe’s leading biotech venture capital firms. Over the last 15 years he has been actively involved in numerous private and public companies in Europe and the US in the biopharmaceutical and medical device arenas. Prior to this he had a career in medicine specialising in interventional cardiology having trained at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Shahzad has a son who attended Manor Lodge before moving on to The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School and a daughter who moved on to St Albans High School for Girls. His youngest child remains at Manor Lodge. Shahzad is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Mr James Segal (Parent Governor)
James is a practising Solicitor and has undertaken a variety of General Counsel and Company Secretarial roles in commerce and industry, having started his legal career at a City law firm. He has a broad experience across a number of legal areas including commercial contracts, business acquisitions, disputes, corporate governance, compliance and investigations.
James has three children. His two sons have now left Manor Lodge and are at St Albans School and Aldenham School. His daughter remains at Manor Lodge. James is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Mr Andrew Williams (Vice-Chair, Education Committee)
Andrew is the Principal of Aldenham School. He studied Materials Engineering at Loughborough University and took a PCGE in Physics at Manchester University. He has taught for over 20 years in Maintained, Independent and International Schools, specialising in Physics but his classroom experience has also included teaching Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Spanish. Andrew has worked for much of his teaching career in boarding schools and spent a number of years as a Housemaster then Deputy Head before taking on his current role. Andrew completed his MA(Ed) in Educational Leadership and Management in 2011 and has been an ISI inspector for seven years. He is married and has three children, all girls.
Andrew is a member of the Education Committee.
Mr Stephen Wilson
Stephen taught Modern Languages at secondary schools for 35 years. For 22 years he was Head of Junior School (Years 7 and 8) at Haberdashers’ Boys with responsibility for pastoral care and progress. He has served as Governor of three schools. In addition he has been involved in activities with people with learning difficulties and children with autism. For 14 years he was Secretary of the League of Friends at a local long-stay hospital. Since retirement in 2005, Stephen has enjoyed writing children’s stories and has visited Manor Lodge to give readings from his books and to discuss PHSE issues.
Stephen is a member of the Education Committee and is also the governor with responsibility for overseeing Safeguarding.
