What will my child learn?

Throughout the school we follow the guidelines set out in the National Curriculum, although we aim to offer a great deal more.

All children have lessons in English, Maths, Science and ICT. We have two very well-equipped ICT suites and in those lessons all pupils are introduced to word-processing, spreadsheets, databases and graphics packages. ICT is also taught in conjunction with other subjects.

In Art, children are taught to draw and gain experience in both paint and print-making skills, which includes a thorough exploration of colour. Your child will receive an introduction to the history of art, will learn about elementary design, and will experiment with mixed media collage, silk-painting, clay, papier-mâché, wire and mudroc.

Each form has two lessons of music each week. Your child will be taught the recorder and to read music and will be encouraged to take up instrumental tuition. Concerts and musical productions take place throughout the school.

Your child will be introduced to French in Reception, concentrating on the development of oral skills. The written word is introduced in the Junior Department and essential grammatical concepts are studied in Years 5 and 6.

Physical Education is an important part of developing a healthy lifestyle, fair play and social, co-operative and positive attitudes. We seek to provide widespread opportunities for your child to represent the school in a variety of sports and to develop skills to the highest possible level.

Gymnastics, soccer, touch-rugby, netball, rounders, cricket and athletics form the core of the sports programme. The school has its own gymnasium, dance studio, playing fields, and an all-weather court. Swimming is taught in Years 3 – 5 and we use the swimming pool at a local sports centre to do this.
