Governors

The Board of Governors for 2009/2010 consists of:-

Mr A J Phipps (Chairman)

Alan Phipps has been a Governor of the School for 10 years and Chairman of the Board of Governors for the last seven years. He is highly committed to the School and to its continuing development, both in terms of the education it provides and the facilities in which it operates.

Alan is a Chartered Accountant by background and is currently a director of a small management consultancy. He lives in Radlett.

He has always been a keen sportsman and, despite advancing years, regularly plays cricket in the summer and table tennis in the winter. As a veteran, he has represented Hertfordshire at both sports.

Alan was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School and continues to be heavily involved in the Old Haberdashers’ Association, of which he was President in 2001/2.

Mrs R Adams (Parent Governor)

Ruth Adams has a Senior Management background in Global Investment Banking and worked in the City for over 13 years until the birth of her younger son. She also has several business interests that she has guided from their launch.

Ruth enjoys her role as an active member and current Treasurer of the Parents Committee. She considers herself to be a full-time wife and mother; she has two sons, one at Manor Lodge in Year 5, whilst her older boy left in July 2010.

Ruth is a member of the Education Committee.

Mr D Arnold (Chairman, Health & Safety)

David Arnold has spent most of his working life in the printing and publishing industry. Having built up and sold a fully integrated group of companies, he now concentrates on the travel industry and is the Chairman of Solo’s Holidays Limited, a specialist Tour Operator. David is a Lay Observer, visiting prisons, Crown Courts and Magistrates’ Courts to ensure that prisoners are treated correctly by security staff. He is also the Chairman of the Employment Resource Centre, a charity involved with enabling the unemployed to return to work by retraining and honing existing skills.

David is the Chairman of the School’s Health and Safety Committee and also serves on the Finance and General Purposes Committee. He has one grandchild at the School, and two older ones who have moved on from Manor Lodge.

Mr M Brahams

Michael Brahams has had a long career in Education and Politics. He has previously been a Governor of Hampstead Secondary School, Parliament Hill Secondary School, and Barrow Hill Primary School; between 1995 – 1998 he was Senior Vice-Chairman of Westminster’s Education Committee.

Michael has been a Councillor for Camden, and currently Bayswater and has served on many Committees, being Chairman of two, and a Cabinet Member for Housing, and then Social Services and Housing, for Westminster Council between 2001 and 2004.

He has been a Director, and subsequently Chairman of CityWest Homes which company runs all Westminster’s Social Housing.

Michael has also been Deputy Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster (1994 – 1995), and in 2000 – 2001 was Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster. He is now Lord Mayor Locum Tenens which means acting as Deputy Lord Mayor for a few weeks a year.

He has had a long business career in the retail trade, and has been both a Merchandising Director and then Joint Managing Director of a Department Store Group, and a Director of a Property Company. He is now a Property Consultant.

Michael is married with two children, and has two grandchildren at Manor Lodge, and is a member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Mr M Cherry (Parent Governor)

Mark Cherry is a Chartered Surveyor with a wide experience in the fields of property investment and development together with a background in banking. He is Investment Director for a major property development company and is responsible for new acquisitions and a range of commercial and residential development projects.

Mark has three boys at Manor Lodge and serves on the Education Committee.

Mr M J Higham (Chairman, Education)

Mike Higham was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School and then at Exeter University (St. Luke’s College). He entered the teaching profession at Felsted Prep School in Essex before moving to Australia to teach science at secondary level at The Armidale School NSW. Returning to the UK as Deputy Head at Felsted Prep School, in 1994 he was appointed to his current position as Headmaster of Moulsford Prep School, a school of 240 boys.

Mike is married with three daughters, two of whom have followed in father’s footsteps into the teaching profession. He is a keen sportsman, having played to a reasonable standard at rugby, squash and cricket. Relaxation is now provided on the golf course and the odd game of cricket.

Mike is the Chairman of the School’s Education Committee and is a trained ISI inspector

Mr M Wagner

Mark Wagner was educated at UCS Hampstead and has a Law Degree from Kings College London. He qualified as a Solicitor in 1985 and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1986. He was a Partner in law firms until 2006 and is now a sole practitioner specialising in litigation, employment and family law. He has been a Deputy District Judge since 1999.

Mark is married with three children, all of whom attended Manor Lodge and who are now at QE Boys and North London Collegiate. He serves on the Finance and General Purposes Committee.

Mr S Wilson

Stephen Wilson taught Modern Languages at secondary schools for 35 years. For 22 years he was Head of Junior School (Years 7 and 8) at Haberdashers’ Boys with responsibility for pastoral care and progress. He has served as Governor of three schools and is on the Education Committee at Manor Lodge. In addition he has been involved in activities with people with learning difficulties and children with autism. For 14 years he was Secretary of the League of Friends at a local long-stay hospital.

Since retirement in 2005, Stephen has enjoyed writing children’s stories and has visited Manor Lodge to give readings from his books and to discuss PHSE issues.
